Total solar eclipse August 2027: All you need to know

The total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026, has passed. The next total solar eclipse will occur on August 2, 2027. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

The moon’s umbra, or the inner part of the moon’s shadow, will sweep across parts of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres on August 2, 2027, creating a total solar eclipse.

Partial solar eclipse begins (P1) (August 2, 07:30 UTC)

The partial solar eclipse will begin on August 2, 2027, at 07:30 UTC, when the moon’s penumbra, or the outer part of the moon’s shadow, touches Earth over the North Atlantic Ocean.

The moon will start covering the sun’s disk, making it appear as if a bite has been taken out of the sun.

Total solar eclipse begins (U1) (August 2, 08:23 UTC)

The total solar eclipse will begin on August 2, 2027, at 08:23 UTC, when the moon’s umbra, or the inner part of the moon’s shadow, touches Earth over the North Atlantic Ocean.

The moon will move entirely in front of the sun’s disk. For a few seconds as totality begins, Baily’s Beads and the diamond ring effect may be visible along the moon’s edge.

Moment of greatest eclipse (August 2, 10:06 UTC)

The moment of greatest eclipse will occur on August 2, 2027, at 10:06 UTC, when the axis of the moon’s shadow cone passes closest to Earth’s center.

The moon will completely cover the sun’s disk, revealing the sun’s corona—the outermost layer of the sun’s atmosphere.

Total solar eclipse ends (U4) (August 2, 11:50 UTC)

The total solar eclipse will end on August 2, 2027, at 11:50 UTC, when the moon’s umbra, or the inner part of the moon’s shadow, leaves Earth over the Indian Ocean.

The moon will begin to move away from the sun’s disk. Once again, Baily’s Beads and the diamond ring effect may be visible along the moon’s edge.

Partial solar eclipse ends (P4) (August 2, 12:43 UTC)

The partial solar eclipse will end on August 2, 2027, at 12:43 UTC, when the moon’s penumbra, or the outer part of the moon’s shadow, leaves Earth over the Indian Ocean.

The moon will no longer overlap the sun’s disk, and the eclipse will be over.

Visibility of the total solar eclipse in August 2027

The total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027, will be visible over Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia along a path about 258 km wide, known as the path of totality. Along this path, the moon will completely cover the sun’s disk for up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds.

However, the partial solar eclipse will be visible from far eastern Canada, much of Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and western and southern Asia.

In Canada, the eclipse will already be in progress at sunrise. In western Africa and Europe, the eclipse will start in mid- to late morning. In eastern Africa and the Middle East, the eclipse will start in the early afternoon. In southern Asia, the eclipse will start in the mid- to late afternoon.

The green lines on the visibility map indicate when the maximum eclipse will happen at locations along those lines.

The blue curved lines indicate the percentage of the sun that will be covered by the moon during the maximum eclipse at those locations.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, and the moon’s umbra, or the inner part of the moon’s shadow, falls on Earth.
